WestEnd Films Unveils 'The Last Day' in Berlin: A Stunning First Look at Alicia Vikander and Wagner Moura's New Film
WestEnd Films is set to launch international sales in Berlin for 'The Last Day', the feature directorial debut of acclaimed visual artist Rachel Rose. The film, inspired by Virginia Woolf's 'Mrs. Dalloway', stars Alicia Vikander, Wagner Moura, and Victoria Pedretti, and is currently in post-production.
At the European Film Market, WestEnd unveiled a first-look image of the film, sparking excitement among industry professionals. CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group are co-representing North American rights for this highly anticipated title.
'The Last Day' explores a single summer day in New York, focusing on the brief yet profound encounter between two mothers, Julia and Taylor. Vikander portrays Julia, a writer battling creative paralysis, unresolved grief, and the challenges of her daughter's adolescence. Pedretti plays Taylor, a labor and delivery nurse facing her own postpartum crisis, which disrupts Julia's fragile equilibrium and forces her to reevaluate her life choices.
Moura, a recent Oscar nominee, joins the cast, adding to the film's star-studded lineup. Rose, a renowned artist known for her work at institutions like LACMA, Tate Modern, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, makes her feature directorial debut with this project. Her previous exhibitions at the Venice Biennale and Carnegie International, along with the Frieze Artist Award, showcase her reputation for formally rigorous and conceptually rich work.
In her own words, Rose explains her inspiration: 'Becoming a mother felt like a collision between a beginning and a threat, and I needed to explore the existential tension of that contradiction. In 'Mrs. Dalloway', I was captivated by Woolf's portrayal of Clarissa's self-erasure, not through dramatic gestures but through the subtle shifts in a single, ordinary day. This narrative structure became my guiding principle.'
The film's production team includes Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, known for their work on 'Past Lives', 'Materialists', and 'May December'. David Kaplan, Lucie Elwes, and Rose also contribute to the production, while Maja Hoffmann and Lucas Hoffmann take on executive producing roles.
Behind the camera, Rose's team features Eric Yue as cinematographer, Taylor Levy as editor, April Napier as costume designer, and Susan Jacobs as an Emmy-winning music supervisor. WestEnd Films has joined the project under its 'WeLove' label, dedicated to female-driven stories and the empowerment of female talent.
