Baking In The July Haze (2026)

In the sweltering heat of July 2026, I embarked on a hiking adventure through Shenandoah, a journey that would test my endurance and resilience. Despite the oppressive temperatures, I was determined to replicate my heroic hike from the previous week, swapping between the AT and Skyline Drive to carve the fastest route possible back to my van. The superstition of saying 'Rabbit, rabbit' at the start of each month, a tradition from my high school Latin class, gave me a sense of good luck and motivation as I set out on this challenging trek.

The first day of my hike was a downhill trek on the AT, with the trail mostly heading towards the park's northern boundary. I stuck to my itinerary, taking it easy and enjoying the views from the various overlooks along the way. However, as the day progressed, I realized that I needed to make some adjustments to my plan. The rocks on the trail slowed me down, and I decided to take a shortcut on the AT to Skyline Drive, which would have been a slower route overall.

As I hiked, I contemplated my options for the next two days. I could either stick to my itinerary and take it easy, or I could try to replicate my heroic hike from the previous week. I decided to take the latter option, swapping between the AT and Skyline Drive to carve the fastest route possible back to my van. This would allow me to avoid the worst of the heat and set me up for an afternoon finish on Saturday, when I would really relish the free time.

The second day of my hike was a challenging one, with over 10 miles of road walking taking their toll. I was hydrated, but everything else was in rough shape. I kept waiting for a second wind that would magically carry me to the Denton Shelter, but it never appeared. Instead, I was sweating more than ever before, the air getting heavier the more I descended.

As I reached the creek before 7:00 PM, I realized that I needed to stop and rest. I quickly surveyed the area for a tentsite and decided to pitch my tent and inflate my sleeping pad. I needed to get my shoes off and let my feet breathe, and I might as well lay down in my tent and try to cool off. Despite the oppressive humidity, I asked for the sun to set so the temperature could finally come down.

In the end, I completed a total of 30.4 miles, 60,471 steps, in a challenging and rewarding hiking adventure. I learned that it's important to be flexible and make adjustments to your plan as you go, and that the trail can provide unexpected help and support when you need it most.
