Schmaltz: South Philly’s Must-Try Breakfast Spot with a Twist | Line Out the Door! (2026)

In the heart of South Philly, a new culinary gem has emerged, and it's got everyone talking. Schmaltz, a breakfast and lunch café, is making waves with its unique take on Jewish cuisine, and its popularity is evident from the lines out the door.

The brainchild of Jeremy Asch and Abby Armstrong, Schmaltz was born out of a simple desire for a good breakfast sandwich. As Asch puts it, 'If we want it, someone else must too.' And boy, were they right!

A Tasty Twist on Jewish Comfort Food

Schmaltz's signature sandwich is a masterpiece. Imagine an oniony potato pancake, a slow-baked egg with a firm texture, and a Philadelphia accent in the form of Tallarico's hoagie spread blended with seasoned mayo. It's a delicious fusion of flavors that has customers raving.

But Schmaltz isn't just about one sandwich. Their menu is a celebration of Ashkenazi and Eastern European cuisine, with blintzes, latkes, and even chicken-skin cracklings (gribenes) on offer. And let's not forget the schmaltz itself, rendered chicken fat that adds a rich, savory note to any dish.

A Neighborhood Café with a Difference

What sets Schmaltz apart is its casual, counter-service approach. It's not your typical Jewish deli, and that's by design. Asch and Chertock wanted to create a space where people could enjoy their favorite Jewish dishes without the formality of a full-scale restaurant.

The opening menu is intentionally small, focusing on quality over quantity. And while bagels are a staple of Jewish cuisine, Schmaltz has decided to steer clear, opting instead to showcase the diversity of Jewish food. 'There's a lot more to Jewish restaurants than the bagel,' Asch asserts.

A Team with a Vision

Schmaltz is the result of a talented trio: Asch, Armstrong, and chef Sam Chertock. Each brings a unique skill set and a passion for food. Asch, with his clinical research background, and Armstrong, with her wealth management and MBA experience, provide the business acumen. Chertock, with his extensive restaurant résumé, brings the culinary expertise.

Their journey hasn't been without challenges. Navigating zoning, construction, and operational details was made easier with the mentorship of Judy Ni and Andy Tessier. 'They took a huge weight off our shoulders,' Asch says.

A Community Investment

Schmaltz is more than just a restaurant; it's an investment in the neighborhood. Asch and Armstrong bought the building with the intention of nourishing their community. 'We want to be a part of it,' Armstrong explains.

The café's previous life as a DIY music venue and art gallery is still visible in the ramp leading to the dining room, a reminder of its rich history. Toddlers now play on this ramp, a symbol of the café's role in bringing the community together.

A Bright Future

Schmaltz's success is a testament to the power of great food and a dedicated team. With its unique menu and community-focused approach, it's no wonder the café has become a local favorite.

As Asch says, 'Maybe calling it Schmaltz is in itself a statement.' And it's a statement that South Philly is ready to embrace.

So, if you're ever in the neighborhood, be sure to check out Schmaltz. You won't leave hungry, and you might just make a new favorite discovery.
