Exposure sites are largely concentrated around Sydney’s CBD and the Inner West, with additional pockets in the North Shore and Western Sydney.
NSW Health notes that the patient had no known contact with anyone else who has measles. This implies community transmission, and that others may have been unknowingly exposed.
Those who were at the listed exposure sites are advised to monitor for symptoms through March 15, as measles symptoms can take up to 18 days to appear after exposure.
Early signs to watch for include fever, eye soreness, a runny nose, and a cough. A few days later, a red, blotchy rash typically appears and then spreads from the head and face to the rest of the body. Measles cases have also been detected elsewhere in NSW, including Lismore, and across other parts of Australia.

Dr. Stephen Conaty of the Southwest Sydney Local Health District urges everyone to stay up to date with their vaccinations. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine remains the best protection, and in some cases can prevent disease even if given soon after exposure.
