Prepare to be dazzled by the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Black & White, a stunning addition to the iconic Moonwatch collection! These new variations will leave you in awe with their sleek, modern twist on a timeless design.
Unveiling the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Black & White
Omega has just unveiled two incredible new additions to the Speedmaster Moonwatch family, featuring the beloved reverse panda dials. Available in stainless steel and the luxurious 18K Moonshine Gold, these timepieces maintain the familiar design language while adding a unique twist.
The dials are a masterpiece in themselves, crafted from two distinct plates with a lacquered finish. The top layer boasts an ultra-glossy polished black surface, while the cutouts for the subdials reveal a contrasting glossy white finish underneath. Each dial layer showcases printed markers and numerals in inverted colors, with the main minute track and text in white and the registers in black. The hands and applied markers match the case metal, hinting at the sapphire-sandwich construction, a departure from the traditional hesalite.
But here's where it gets controversial... Omega has upgraded the bezel insert from black aluminum to sleek black ceramic, featuring a white enamel tachymeter. This detail is rarely seen on current Moonwatch variants, usually reserved for precious metal and two-tone configurations. By offering a stainless steel model with a ceramic bezel, Omega caters to collectors seeking a modern interpretation of their classic chronograph.
Under the hood, you'll find the reliable Calibre 3861 chronograph movement, manually wound and featuring Omega's signature free sprung balance and co-axial escapement. Certified by METAS, this movement offers a 50-hour power reserve.
The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Black & White is now available in the standard catalog, priced at $10,400 for the steel model and a premium $49,300 for the Moonshine Gold variant.
Our Take on the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Black & White
These new releases are a fantastic way to start the year, offering a subtle evolution rather than a radical redesign. They might appeal to those who found last year's Planet Ocean redesign too bold. Rest assured, these aren't replacing the classic Moonwatches, but they do bring a fresh take on a beloved design.
It's intriguing that Omega chose to introduce a steel Moonwatch with a ceramic bezel insert. While the aesthetic appeal is undeniable, with the glossiness of the dial and bezel mirroring each other, the real standout feature is the dial's exceptional glossiness.
While the Moonwatch community often appreciates the faithfulness to the original 60s models, these new versions align with Omega's modern design language, offering a slightly shinier and more commercially appealing look. One can't help but draw comparisons to other chronographs, particularly the ceramic-bezeled Rolex Daytona, as Omega continues to release modern, glossy, and upmarket offerings.
I had a brief opportunity to view these in person, and I immediately noticed a chunkier profile compared to the classics. Upon further inspection, it turns out these are ever-so-slightly thicker, measuring 13.54mm compared to the regular variants' 13.18mm. This can be attributed to the dial construction, as the sinking of the subdials is quite pronounced.
Stay tuned for my colleague Mark's hands-on review, where he'll delve deeper into these Moonwatches and share his insights.
