Eurosport among Discovery channels taken off the air in Russia

  • Discovery joins Amazon and WarnerMedia to suspend channels in Russia
  • Company’s channels distributed in Russia through Media Alliance
  • Eurosport coverage in Russia includes winter sports and tennis

Eurosport is one of 15 channels broadcast giant Discovery took off in Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Confirming the decision, a statement from the company said: “Discovery has decided to suspend the broadcasting of its channels and services in Russia.”

Pan-European sports broadcaster Eurosport previously held media rights in Russia to the National Hockey League (NHL) under a three-year deal that expired in 2019.

Other sports broadcast by Eurosport in Russia through its partnerships with various international federations include skiing and biathlon, as well as Grand Slam tennis tournaments.

In addition to Eurosport’s linear channels, SportBusiness reports that the broadcaster’s social channels and Eurosport Player have been suspended in Russia, where Discovery has also pulled other media brands such as Animal Planet and TLC.

Discovery Channels are distributed in Russia through a partnership with Media Alliance, a joint venture with National Media Group, which also owns state broadcaster Channel One.

Discovery joins other media companies such as Amazon and WarnerMedia in suspending operations in Russia amid a wider boycott of the country by Western brands including sportswear companies Nike, Puma and Adidas.
