Every sweater that Kanye wears in ‘jeen-yuhs’

I promised a comprehensive guide to sweaters and sweatshirts and that’s what we’re here to deliver. Don’t forget it’s Ye: he didn’t just show up in a sweatshirt, get warm and decide to take it off. It was the to see! The off-the-shoulder sweatshirt is a legit style maneuver and very much in line with the rest of Ye’s heavy prep style at the time.

Like a fashion text, jeen-yuhs is a great reminder of the amount of preparation and especially Ralph Lauren who dominated during this particular stretch. Ye would go on to become arguably the most influential person in menswear, but in the early 2000s he even succumbed to the dreaded mall triumvirate of Abercrombie, American Eagle and Hollister. In the studio, he layered a polo shirt under this red striped sweatshirt.

Towards the end of Part 2, we begin to see the synergy of gear and streetwear that would define Ye’s early career. A quick glance at this sweatshirt might not reveal much, but look closer and you’ll spot the A Bathing Ape logo on the chest. No wonder this sweater appeared after Ye started mingling with Pharrell, a pal of Bape founder Nigo.

Bonus Hoodie

It is not a sweater or a sweatshirt, but it is a comfortable outerwear, and its appearance in jeen-yuhs is so memorable and beautiful that it must be included here. So feast your eyes on Ye wearing an Abercrombie & Fitch hoodie.

Finally, confirmation that Ye and I had the same tastes when I was in high school. Turns out, whether you’re trying to get signed to Roc-A-Fella records or just showing off to your fellow 14-year-olds, Abercrombie is the answer.
