Nu Sole will open at 1009 West Jefferson St. in Joliet

JOLIET, IL – Since the owner of Louis’ Family Restaurant retired at the end of November, Jefferson Plaza in Joliet has been dormant. But with a new year here, things are on the rise. Antoine Matthews Jr. and his father Antoine Matthews Sr. are preparing to open their athletic shoe and sportswear store called Nu Sole.

They fill the vacant storefront at the West Side Music Center, 1009 West Jefferson St.

“We’re shooting for the end of January, but it could be February,” Antoine Matthews Jr. told Joliet Patch editor-in-chief in Wednesday’s telephone interview.

Nu Sole will sell basketball shoes and tennis shoes including Nike, Air Jordan, Adidas, New Balance and more. The new store will sell jogging suits, windbreakers and other sportswear.

The vast majority of shoes for sale at Nu Sole will be new.

Nu Sole will provide a shoe repair and restoration service, Matthews said.

There will be three different services. One will be for athletic shoes requiring cleaning. A second will be a full restoration for shoes that are “broke” or “bad”. The third will be a full shoe reconstruction service requiring a complete overhaul.

The father and son’s business partners plan to be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

“I love the place,” commented Antoine Matthews Jr .. “It’s right on the main street, and it’s easily visible.”

Matthews said he’s originally from Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to Joliet three years ago because he has family here.

The Nu Sole store will fill the void left by the West Side Music Store at Jefferson Plaza in Joliet.
