Precautions to take to avoid heatstroke

Want to stay healthy and avoid the scorching summer heat, which is a common concern at this time of year? The summer heat is not only physically exhausting and uncomfortable, but it also puts us at risk for illnesses like skin irritations, rashes, fever, dehydration and food poisoning. Although the summer heat is pleasant, it is essential not to neglect our health. Extra precautions should be taken to beat the heat and stay fit and healthy during this season.

Consume lots of water: Summer heat and sweat can dehydrate your body, leading to adverse health outcomes such as fever and chills. Drink at least 2-3 liters of water a day to stay hydrated.

Take precautions to avoid heatstroke: Another major problem that older people face during the hot summer months is heat stroke. The main reason older people are more vulnerable to this is that their bodies don’t adapt as quickly to temperature changes. High fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, and dizziness are all common symptoms of heatstroke.

Light and comfortable clothes: In the summer, it’s best to dress in breathable, lightweight clothing to keep your body temperature regulated under the scorching sun. Instead of heavy clothes, choose natural fabrics like cotton and linen.

Indoor stays are the best: Outdoor activities should be limited to the cooler times of the day, such as early morning before 11 a.m. or late evening after 5 p.m.

Eat healthy and light: Eat small, frequent meals. Heavy meals high in carbohydrates and fats generate a lot of heat in the body. Focus on fresh fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as oranges, watermelon, tomatoes, etc.

Protect your eyes: Wear protective eyewear to protect your eyes from the sun’s rays at work and in your leisure time. When you go outside, wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of UV rays.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine: Alcohol, carbonated drinks, and coffee can all dehydrate you quickly. If possible, try to limit your intake of these popular beverages, especially in hot weather. A good substitute is plain or flavored water.
