While the trend of revealing skin in parts and portions originated in the 1930s with American actress Bette Davis, she has had a love-hate relationship with catwalk designers over the years. When he started hitting the streets with his lighter versions that reflected poor aesthetics, high-end labels waved him goodbye. However, for the past few seasons, the cutout trend has been back and getting a big reception from Millennials and Gen Z. Whether it’s the popularity of Euphoria (OTT drama series) or the endorsement of It-girls like Dua Lipa and Kendall Jenner, cutouts are redefining hot today. “It’s a ‘return to sexy’ after two years of pajama chic. It’s also a throwback to the 90s and a slight nod to Liz Hurley’s iconic safety pin dress,” says designer Nachiket Barve.
And there is an encouraging change! The cutout style is not limited to just zero size. It goes hand in hand with inclusivity now. It makes a cut among plus size beauties who rock style like a boss. With fashion maestros such as Coperni and Michael Kors parading the catwalks with cutouts, fashion is bending the rules. Closer to home, even body-positive influencers like Sakshi Sindwani and Neelakshi are making the peek-a-boo trend inclusive. “Cutouts can look intimidating for someone on the heavier side, but when done right, they can be one of the best ways to reveal the sexy side of you,” says Neelakshi. Echoing Neelakshi, Sindwani says, “Cutouts can be very flattering for taller body shapes, as they give you the illusion of curves when placed in the right position.
If you want to date this trend, remember, less is more. “You can show the body part you’re most comfortable with or the part you want to emphasize,” says stylist Ruby Bhatia. Few examples may show skin at the waist, chest, shoulder, a high slit, a thong at the waist, or cleavage-revealing slits around the chest, she suggests. Giving some styling advice, Sindwani says, “If you’re rocking a glamorous cutout outfit, balance is key. You can wear a cutout top with flared denim pants or a cutout blouse with a cotton floral saree for a stunning look. Also pay attention to the placement of the cup and the fit of the fabric. “Since I’m heavier in my belly area, I make sure the cups are adjacent to my shoulders or underbust area, which looks more flattering,” says Neelakshi.
